Many of the Kalevala jewelry designed by Germund Paaer became beloved classics

Germund Paaer (1881–1950) was the first chief designer of Kalevala Jewelry. In the spring of 1937, the Kaleva Woman's Memorial Committee made a decision to start the production of replicas of ancient jewelry in order to finance a statue for the Finnish women. The commission for the design and implementation of the jewelry was given to Paaer, who worked as a drawing teacher at Ateneum art school. Paaer selected the first 40 jewelry models from the collections of the National Museum, made working drawings of them and found makers for the jewelry. The first Kalevala jewelry were presented to the press at a tea party hosted by the First Lady Mrs. Kaisa Kallio in the Presidential Palace on December 8, 1937.

"The edges of the jewelry must be perfectly smooth."

It can be said that in the beginning Kalevala Koru was as much the creation of Germund Paaer as the women who founded the company. Paaer was talented, enthusiastic and very productive: in total, he designed more than 300 jewelry and the same number of wooden decorative and utility items, which Kalevala Jewelry began to produce in the years of the Continuation War when the shortage of metal slowed down jewelry production. Many of the Kalevala jewelry designed by Germund Paaer became beloved classics that were made for decades, some still are. The cheerfully shimmering Sydänsormus, Heart Ring has been continuously in Kalevala Jewelry's product range since the end of the 1930s, for more than 80 years. Almost as old is Moon Goddess, which combines the most beautiful details of Viking jewelry.
