Kuusamon kirves | Kalevala

Kuusamo's ax

He who wore the axe-shaped jewel had power and strength. However, it did not protect its wearer from iron axes and swords. In ancient times, when danger threatened, it was common to hide valuables safely in the bosom of the earth. The hider didn't always return to collect his treasure. The large ax-shaped plate pendant that was the prototype of this piece of jewelry has been found in the village of Kuusamo Lämsä as part of a silver treasure that was hidden in the ground during the Crusader era, a time that was both a time of unprecedented prosperity and stormy events in the North. The abundant stamp decoration of the pendant points to a Karelian origin.
